Hello there everybody 👋🏻
This week I’m keeping it short with two must-watch items that I think many of you would enjoy. One’s a TV show and the other is a movie up for two Oscars. Let’s get to it!
TV Show: Life & Beth
In this 30-minute show starring Amy Schumer, you follow Beth, a wine saleswoman who has come to an interesting intersection of her life. Season 1 centers around Beth working through some childhood trauma, learning about who she is, and meeting John (Michael Cera) – a farmer (I think) who works at one of the wine farms.
This show definitely focuses on some heavier topics, but is also charming in a simple, delightful way. Plus, Michael Cera is my guy.
John is on the spectrum and as a result, there’s some tension between Beth and him once they start officially dating as she’s not quite sure how to walk through stressful situations with him.
Overall, this show is funny, meaningful, and not complicated plot- or story-wise. It’s kind of structured like modern sitcoms nowadays. It’s on Hulu for all you streamers.
Movie: Past Lives
Now for the main event. This movie is a KILLER. You won’t be ready for the ending, either. It’s not tied up in a nice little bow, which is my preferred movie ending. Give me an ending that makes me ponder, ask questions about the movie.
This stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, and it follows their friendship, relationship (?), and everything in-between. This one also has fun moments, makes you feel, but is also quite simply laid out.
There’s not too many characters, really only one big storyline you follow throughout, and it’s shot beautifully. That’s also how I would describe this movie: beautiful.
Somehow this is Celine Song’s first feature movie she’s ever directed, and she nailed it. The story and overall feel of this movie is very unique. Very rarely am I also very into a movie that is focused on a relationship.
It’s on Paramount+ for all you streamers.
