We’re about three weeks post Super Bowl, and this statement is still ringing true in my ears: don’t bet against Patrick Mahomes. I didn’t, thankfully.
The 2023-24 NFL season is in the past and everyone is now focused on the draft coming up in April. Yet the spectacular, unexpected run the Kansas City Chiefs just completed isn’t off my mind. The start of the Mahomes era might be the best six year run we’ve ever seen. Since he took the starting job in his second NFL season, he’s accomplished the following:
2 MVPs
4 Super Bowl appearances
3 Super Bowl victories
6(!) straight AFC Championship game appearances
The moment Mahomes took the field in 2018, he’s lit the league on fire. And he hasn’t slowed down. It’s been a constant, burning flame.
Has their offense been less explosive as of recent? Less exciting? Sure. But all Mahomes and company does is find ways to win. It’s unbelievable.
They entered the 2023-24 playoffs as the no. 3 seed in the AFC. Almost stumbling into the playoffs after a (relatively) disappointing season for them. But once the playoffs started, they managed to rattle off four straight victories.
This was supposed to be an off year for them. Someone else will win while the reigning champs retool. The Kansas City Chiefs are dipping slightly, someone else will take the spotlight for a year. Yet, Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the supporting cast just didn’t relent.
Now, their defense deserves as much of the credit, if not more, as the offense. All year the defense didn’t allow more than 27 points, including holding the explosive San Francisco 49ers offense to a measly 22 points in the Super Bowl.
It was a more well rounded KC team this year. But that doesn’t take away from Mahomes’s greatness.
Personally, I hope he breaks every record at the QB position, including Super Bowl victories. Not that it has anything to do with me wanting him to dethrone Tom Brady as the GOAT. No, not at all.
As a Colts fan and neutral observer of the Chiefs, it’s just amazing watching this era of football. I kept trying to resist it. It can be boring for one team to keep winning and winning, but I can’t help but like this team. I even tried to dislike Mahomes after he threw a fit after a regular season game against the Buffalo Bills, which ended in controversial Chiefs loss.
Now, with their third Super Bowl trophy in hand – when no one expected them to – I relent. I give in. Go make history, Mahomes.
What I’m Up To
As far as weekend plans go, “Dune: Part Two” is the main event. Movie tickets are secured for this highly anticipated sci-fi sequel.
The first “Dune” didn’t disappoint, in fact it felt like one of the best book-to-movie adaptations I’d ever seen. It carried the weight and importance that was conveyed so marvelously in the book.
If you’ve read the book, you know that the tone makes you feel like you’re reading an incredibly paramount story. It’s almost hard to describe in words, but the author Frank Herbert had a way of making the reader feel like this was the most important story ever told.
The first movie carried itself beautifully. Now, part two awaits. And I’m expecting it to be even better. The majority of the action and pivotal points happen in the second half. I’m talking epic fight scenes, riding a humongous sand worm, the culmination of everything building off of the first movie.
If you haven’t seen the first one, do it! I’m really not that into sci-fi, but I loved the book and movie. Now, the book kind of lost me at certain points so don’t feel like you need to read it, but the film absolutely delivered.
Otherwise, it looks like Abby and I are ordering in pizza for dinner and relaxing this weekend. The pizza of choice: King Dough.
Indianapolis peeps, where’s the best pizza in the city in your opinion? I vote for Brozinni Pizzeria. King Dough is up there, though.
Tweets!
The Super Bowl brought many great tweets. I’m late, but I must share.
“You gotta give”
I just wish this would’ve happened.
Why were old Travis Kelce tweets kind of lit?
People can change.
Have a weekend, everyone 👏🏻
