Lazy Giant #33: Recommendation: comedy of the year is a wrap
If the Oscars had a comedy movie category, this one would win.
Comedy movies are back! After a lull for what feels like most of the 2010s – comedies were either not made or awfully made – 2023 is bringing a resurgence of them.
Within the past three months “No Hard Feelings,” “Joy Ride,” and “Bottoms” have been released and are relative hits, considering the state of movie theaters and streaming services these days.
‘Bottoms’ is the breadwinner
Although “No Hard Feelings” is the leading money-maker out of these three – earning over $87M worldwide – “Bottoms” distinguishes itself by being far goofier and overall a more clever, and stupid, movie. We’ll get to that.
“Bottoms” takes place in modern times at a high school where two girls start a self-defense club (or fight club) for girls, only to earn the attention of two girls at their school who they’re interested in and want to date. The tagline is “A movie about empowering women (the hot ones).”
